Screw and Barrel Configuration for Twin-Screw Compounding
The screws and barrels are the main processing section of a twin-screw extruder. They control conveying, melting, mixing, dispersion, venting, pressure building, and final compound quality.
For each compounding line, the screw configuration and barrel arrangement must be selected according to the polymer, filler content, additive package, reinforcement type, output target, and material sensitivity. Different applications require different processing designs.
Modular screw elements allow the process section to be adapted for feeding, melting, distributive mixing, dispersive mixing, degassing, and pressure development. The barrel system can also be configured with feeding sections, closed barrels, side-feeding ports, venting barrels, vacuum sections, and discharge barrels.
For abrasive compounds such as high-filler masterbatch, glass-fiber-reinforced plastics, and mineral-filled materials, wear-resistant screw and barrel materials are important for long-term production stability.
